Why BabySteps®: The First Year?

The idea for BabySteps®: The First Year first occurred to Helen when her own baby was born four years ago. Helen’s background is in developmental psychology and she has a PhD by research into children’s early language.

When her little boy was born she wanted to record his first milestones. Thanks to her academic background, she appreciated the significance of the physical, emotional, intellectual and social milestones that occur during a baby’s first year. Although baby diaries encourage you to make a record of common milestones like first tooth, first haircut and so on, they do not allow you to capture the excitement of those aspects of a baby’s development of which Helen was aware.

Helen also found that the post-natal combination of shock and elation at the arrival of a new baby meant that she was not convinced that her organisational and time management skills would be up to remembering where she’d placed a diary - never mind remembering to fill it in! That’s when she decided to use her expertise as a developmental psychologist and her experience of motherhood to create BabySteps®: The First Year. BabySteps®: The First Year can be hung up in the kitchen, for example. At least then, as mum wanders around in her post-natal haze of hormones, she has an everyday visual prompt to remind her to record baby’s precious firsts!
